This post is the opposite: every real way to pay nothing, pay once, or pay per minute, including where our own product's non-subscription option falls short.

Riverside's free transcription tool advertises unlimited free transcription with no signup and lets you download TXT and SRT. The limitation that matters: it does not separate speakers, so interviews and meetings come back as one continuous block attributed to a single voice. For lectures, dictation, and solo podcasts, it is the best deal on this page and it is not our product.

Self-hosted Whisper is the same engine most paid tools run, free on your own hardware: pip install openai-whisper, then whisper interview.mp3 --model large-v3. Unlimited, private, and yours. The price is technical setup and slow processing on ordinary laptops.

MacWhisper Pro is a native Mac app with a one-time license, 59 EUR at the time of writing (the developer runs promotions, so check the current price). Whisper Large runs locally, unlimited, with speaker recognition and clean SRT/VTT export. If you are on a Mac and transcribe regularly but hate subscriptions, this is the best buy on this page; over a year it costs less than any subscription and after that it is free. It does not exist for Windows or Linux, and there is no URL/YouTube input; local files only.

Pay Per Minute

ConvertAudioToText minute packs: 100 minutes for $9.99, 500 for $39.99, 1000 for $69.99, or any custom amount from 50 minutes at about 10 cents a minute. Minutes never expire and there is no recurring charge. Every transcript gets the premium engine: speaker labels, timestamps, AI summary, 99 languages, and URL input for YouTube and podcast links.

Buying minutes also unlocks file downloads. With a minute pack you download SRT, VTT, DOCX, PDF and JSON files; TXT is free on any account. You read, edit, copy and download the full transcript from the editor.

Rev human transcription at $1.99 per minute is the pay-as-you-go option for audio that must be right: legal, medical, published quotes. A 30-minute interview costs about $60, roughly 60 times the AI price. Worth it exactly when an error costs more than the transcript.

When a Subscription Is Honestly Cheaper

Run the numbers before committing to pay-as-you-go on principle. At 7 to 10 cents a minute, transcription costs:

• 1 hour/month: $4.20 to $6, pay-as-you-go wins clearly
• 2 hours/month: $8.40 to $12, roughly break-even
• 5 hours/month: $21 to $30, a subscription wins clearly
