Dissertation Interview Transcription for Thesis Research

Transcribe your thesis interviews yourself, without paying a typist by the minute

Spoken language:

No account? The first 30 minutes of any file are free. Create a free account for premium on your first file.

Upload each thesis interview as recorded and get a transcript split into interviewer and participant turns, with timestamps for checking quotes. Correct it in the editor, rename speakers to pseudonyms, and export to Word or CSV for coding.

Why students use it for thesis interviews

Free to start

The first 30 minutes of any file are free with no signup, and a free account's first file can run up to an hour.

Quotes you can cite

Every line has a timestamp, so you can go back to the audio and confirm a quote before it goes into a chapter.

Interviewer and participant

Speaker labels separate your questions from the answers. Rename them to your pseudonyms.

Word for your supervisor

Export a clean Word document with or without timestamps, ready for an appendix or for coding.

How it works

1

Upload the interview

MP3, M4A or WAV from your recorder or phone, or a video call recording.

2

Check it against the audio

Click a line to hear it, fix names and subject terms, and anonymize.

3

Export for analysis

Download Word, CSV or TXT and code it in the tool your department uses.

Thesis interviews: from recording to appendix

A realistic workflow for a set of interviews

  1. Name each file with the participant code and date before you upload it.
  2. Upload, then check each transcript while it is fresh in your mind.
  3. Rename speakers to Interviewer and the participant code.
  4. Remove identifying details, then export Word for your records and appendix.
  5. Export CSV if you code in a spreadsheet, or import the Word file into your analysis tool.

What to tell your ethics board

Say that recordings are processed by an automated transcription service, that files are encrypted in transit and at rest, and that no person listens to them. Say how long you keep the audio: on the free plan source audio is deleted automatically, usually after 7 days, and on paid plans you choose the retention period. You can delete a transcript at any time.

Yes. Checking the transcript while listening is also your first pass at analysis. The transcript saves you the typing; it does not replace knowing your data.

Rename each speaker to a code such as P01, then search the transcript for names, places and employers mentioned aloud and edit them out before you export.

Each file is transcribed in one main language, detected or chosen by you. If participants switch languages, review those passages, and see the multilingual transcription page for tips.
