Qualitative Research Transcription for Interviews and Focus Groups
Transcribe research interviews and focus groups with speaker labels, timestamps and exports ready for coding
No account? The first 30 minutes of any file are free. Create a free account for premium on your first file.
Upload each interview or focus group as one file and get a transcript with every turn labeled by speaker and timed. Rename participants to your pseudonyms, check the text against the audio, then export to Word for reading or CSV for your coding tool.
Built for qualitative work
Speaker turns for every participant
Each voice gets its own label and timestamp, so moderator questions and participant answers are easy to tell apart.
Pseudonyms in one place
Rename Speaker 3 to P07 once and every line and export uses the pseudonym.
CSV for coding
Export Start, End, Speaker and Text columns for a spreadsheet or analysis tool, or Word for close reading.
Themes and quotes
Research interview and focus group AI templates draft themes, codes, quotes and points of agreement for you to check.
How it works
Upload one session per file
Interviews and focus groups go up as recorded, even when they run past an hour on a paid plan or pass.
Check and anonymize
Listen to unclear lines, fix terms, and rename speakers to participant codes.
Export for analysis
Download Word, CSV or TXT, with or without timestamps and speaker names.
Qualitative research transcription: a working method
A workflow that holds up in a methods section
- Record each session as one file and keep the original.
- Upload it and let the transcript finish. Several files can run at once with bulk upload.
- Rename speakers to participant codes, then read the transcript while listening at the parts that matter.
- Remove identifying details said aloud, such as names of people and workplaces.
- Export Word for reading and memoing, or CSV to load segments into your coding tool.
What the AI templates give you
- Research interview: four to eight themes with short codes, verbatim quotes per theme and notes on the interview itself.
- Focus group: points of consensus, disagreements with who held each position, and a summary of each speaker's contribution.
- Both quote from the transcript; check every quote against the audio before it goes into your write-up.
Ethics and data handling
- Files and transcripts are encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest (AES-256).
- Recordings are processed by automated systems only. No person listens to your files.
- On the free plan, source audio is deleted automatically, usually after 7 days. On paid plans you choose how long source audio is kept, from 7 days to a year, or with no time limit.
- Deleting a transcript moves it to the Trash for 30 days. Delete forever or Empty Trash removes it at once.

Frequently asked questions
It is close to what was said, with punctuation added. Many filler words are kept, but it is not a strict verbatim or Jefferson transcript: pauses, overlaps and non-verbal sounds are not marked. If your method needs those, add them while you check the transcript.
Word (DOCX) and TXT files import into the common qualitative analysis tools, and CSV gives one row per segment with Start, End, Speaker and Text. TXT downloads free on every file with a free account. Word, PDF, SRT, VTT, CSV and JSON come with your first file, the Weekly Pass, a minutes top-up or a paid plan.
Rename speakers to codes before you export, and remove names said aloud in the editor. Files are encrypted in transit and at rest and are not listened to by people. Check what your ethics approval says about cloud transcription before you upload.
Yes, speakers are detected automatically. With six or more people, short replies and crosstalk are the most likely to land on the wrong label, so check those passages. You cannot set the number of speakers in advance yet.
The research interview template drafts themes with short codes and representative quotes; the focus group template lists points of consensus, disagreements and each speaker's contribution. Treat them as a first pass to check, not as your analysis. The AI summary, action items, AI templates, AI chat and translation work on your first file with a free account, and on every file with a paid plan, the Weekly Pass or a minutes top-up.
