How Maori transcripts are written

Transcripts use te reo Māori spelling, often with macrons on long vowels (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū).

In our test on read sentences, macrons appeared in common words such as kōrero and ngā, but not on every long vowel, and English words in the reading, such as kilometres, were written in English. Add missing macrons when you review.

What people transcribe in Maori

Kura and education

Lessons in te reo Māori become text that students and teachers can read along with.

Broadcasting

Māori radio and TV segments come back with timestamps for captions.

Whānau and oral history

Recordings of elders become text that families can keep.

Tip for Maori recordings

Macrons change meaning in te reo Māori. Plan time to add or check them, especially on names.

FAQ

Are macrons included?

Sometimes. In our test common words had macrons, but not every long vowel did, so check them.

What about English words in a Māori recording?

In our test, English words were written in English. For long English parts, choose Auto-detect.

Is there a sample transcript on this page?

Not yet. We only publish samples made from audio we can confirm is in the public domain. We tested this language with our own test recordings, on both the free preview and a signed-in account, before adding the page.

Is the Maori transcription free?

Yes. Maori files run on our premium engine with speaker labels, up to 2 hours a month on a free account. You can transcribe up to 30 Maori files a day, up to 30 minutes each, for free, and your first file can run up to an hour. Reading, copying, the full editor and TXT downloads stay free. Action items, email drafts, AI summaries and DOCX, PDF, SRT, VTT and JSON downloads come with your first file, the Weekly Pass ($9.99 for 20 hours over 7 days) and paid plans. Full-length files from $8.33/mo billed yearly.
